“Using genomics to inform the conservation management of insurance populations of threatened species”

Dr. Klaus-Peter Koepfli grew up near the base of the San Gabriel Mountains outside Los Angeles, which afforded many opportunities to go hiking and enjoy the outdoors. These experiences fostered his love of nature and eventually science. After attending Whitman College in Walla Walla, Washington, he earned his PhD in Biology at the University of California, Los Angeles, in the laboratory of Dr. Robert K. Wayne. Following a lectureship and two postdoctoral research appointments at UCLA, Dr. Koepfli received a Cancer Research Training Award Fellowship at the National Cancer Institute at Fort Detrick, Frederick, Maryland. Thereafter he became a Senior Fellow at the Theodosius Dobzhansky Center for Genome Bioinformatics, Saint Petersburg State University, in Saint Petersburg, Russia. He was then recruited to the Center for Species Survival at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute to lead a research program emphasizing the application of genomics to insurance populations of threatened species. In 2020, Dr. Koepfli joined the Smithsonian-Mason School of Conservation as a Senior Research Scientist.
