When and how did you realize that you wanted to study Genetics & Genomics?

I realized I wanted to study Genetics & Genomics when I was working in Dr. Michael Schlappi’s lab at Marquette University. My research project in his lab focused on identifying genes that potentially contributed to cold tolerance in Oryza sativa and determining which biological pathways they might control. Studying this made me realize that I was incredibly fascinated by genes and how they interact with each other.

Why did you choose the Genetics & Genomics Ph.D. program at A&M?

I chose the Genetics & Genomics Ph.D. program at A&M because of the interdisciplinary opportunities the program offers. I am excited to explore topics in genetics that relate to all facets of science, from chemical engineering to oncology research.

If you were free to choose anything, what research question/topic would you like to address for your graduate studies?

If I were free to choose anything, I would like to examine the effects mitochondrial DNA and mitoribosome functions have on tumorigenesis.

Who was your famous role model growing up?

My famous role model growing up was Amelia Earhart.

What would be your dream job after graduation from the program?

My dream job after graduation is working as a research professor at a university, getting to run a lab, and educating the next generation of biologists.

Do you have any hidden talents? If so, what are they.

I am a graphic designer by hobby and competed on the collegiate level for esports.

Do you have any pets? If so, please tell us about them.

My family has two dogs, Scout, and Belle. Belle is a mutt (husky, poodle, akita, beagle, etc.). She loves ear scratches and long naps in the sun and. Scout is an English setter who is much larger than he thinks he is and adores crawling into your lap for snuggles.

Favorite place you have travelled to.

My favorite place I have traveled to is Giant’s Causeway in Scotland.
