“My lab uses both empirical and theoretical approaches to study the large-scale physical structure of genomes.  We use whole-genome sequencing to identify changes like fusions, fissions, duplications, and inversions that lead to the divergence of genomes.  We also use theory, simulations, and math to help us understand how we expect genomes to evolve across a range of conditions.”

How long have you been a faculty member at Texas A&M?

I opened my lab at Texas A&M in September of 2017.

What made you choose to join the A&M faculty?

I chose Texas A&M because of the diversity of faculty.  While most universities have one or two departments with biologists Texas A&M has over a dozen departments with scientists that share my interest in genetics.

Who’s your favorite superhero?

I guess I would have to go with Thor.  He loved coffee when he tried it and I don’t function without it.
