When and how did you realize that you wanted to study Genetics?
During my undergrad journey, the first two projects where I was able to get exposure in research were bioinformatics projects. I was able to study and characterize different novel genes that if mutated could lead to dementrial changes within the human body. Learning about how genes can alternate different mechanisms or lead to diseases was the moment I knew I wanted to study Genetics.
Why did you choose the Genetics PhD program at A&M?
The reason I choose the Genetics PhD program at A&M was because I felt the support and guidance from the faculty during my visit to the campus. I never felt alone or that I did not belong. They ensured we were making the best decisions for our future endeavors, and I felt that the environment at A&M was going to fulfill what I needed to be successful in a graduate program.
If you were free to choose anything, what research question/topic would you like to address for your graduate studies?
If I were to choose anything to research, I would focus on behavior and environmental impacts on the human genome, however my studies remain open to anything.
Fun Facts:
What would be your dream job after graduation from the program?
My dream job after graduating from the program would be to own a lab where I can provide other students research opportunities and have them learn about the research field. When I first started as an undergrad, I did not know anyone with a PhD let alone a PhD in STEM. I would love to provide students a space where they could develop skills and learn about all the different fields there are.
Do you have any hidden talents? If so, what are they.
During COVID-19 I was able to have a lot of time to myself where I discovered my enjoyment of drawing and painting. I would consider myself as a beginner, however I have been trying to learn new techniques and have watched different YouTube videos to guide my skills. I do not have any specific themes that I draw, I usually draw what I find on Pinterest. When I take some time to draw throughout the day, I feel at ease, and this helps me de-stress from the day.
