When and how did you realize that you wanted to study Genetics & Genomics?

My dedicated interest in genetics began during a high school course that introduced me to the fundamentals of human heredity at the chromosomal level. While the content was relatively basic, it sparked a curiosity that drove me to explore the broader applications of genetics. I quickly became fascinated by how a deeper understanding of genetic mechanisms and discoveries could transform the way we address complex biological challenges.

Why did you choose the Genetics & Genomics Ph.D. program at A&M?

The combination of a supportive community and the interdisciplinary nature of the program drew me to choose Texas A&M for my Ph.D. During my campus visit, I was struck by how genuinely invested the faculty and graduate students were—not just in their research, but in each other’s success. Most conversations highlighted the importance of not only academic excellence, but also finding a research environment where you feel valued and motivated. I was also impressed by the breadth of expertise within the Genetics and Genomics program, which will allow me to explore research at the intersection of multiple biological disciplines.

If you were free to choose anything, what research question/topic would you like to address for your graduate studies?

While my background is strongest in plant molecular genetics, my research interests extend broadly to any area of genetics that contributes meaningfully to the future of life on Earth. I am driven by questions that address pressing biological and environmental challenges—whether that means improving crop resilience, understanding genetic regulation, or advancing our knowledge of genome function. Ultimately, I am motivated by the potential of genetic research to solve real-world problems in health, sustainability, and conservation, and I am excited to pursue projects where I can make a lasting contribution.

Fun Facts:

  • Do you have any pets? If so, please tell us about them.

I have two three-year-old cats, Kaya and Hazel, whom I adopted in 2022. Kaya is a tuxedo cat who loves to chirp at reflections of light on the wall and dramatically wail whenever it rains. Hazel, a devoted tabby, ensures that no morsel of food goes uneaten, and that no morning goes without hugs.

  • Favorite place you have travelled to.

My brother, Erik has been hiking to the highest points of most of the states in the contiguous United States. I have been fortunate enough to join him on crossing a couple high points off his list, with my favorite one being Humphrey’s Peak in Arizona. Standing at the summit, I loved the contrast of feeling both on top of the world and incredibly small.
