When and how did you realize that you wanted to study Genetics?

I knew I wanted to study science since 8th grade science class, when the substitute teacher played us a documentary about scientists looking for the cure for cancer in algae. I chose genetics in particular when I learned that the cure to cancer (and ultimately other diseases) could already be inside our DNA.

Why did you choose the Genetics PhD program at A&M?

I chose the Genetics PhD program at A&M because of the vast amount of research opportunities and funding at the university, as well as the welcoming community. I felt as though A&M was the best choice for helping me become a successful scientist by providing ample tools and mentorship, as well as acquiring some friendships along the way 🙂

If you were free to choose anything, what research question/topic would you like to address for your graduate studies?

My passion in genetics is age related diseases, and aging itself. I am interested in how molecular mechanisms (particularly mitochondrial) can slow down or cease overtime, leading to the progression of age-related symptoms and diseases.

Do you have any hidden talents? If so, what are they.

I’m not sure if it’s a ‘talent’ in the traditional sense, but I love to bake!

Do you have any pets? If so, please tell us about them.

Yes! Three dogs, Benson (pit-lab mix), Hunter (golden retriever) and Titan (ironically, a Pekingese)

Favorite place you have traveled to.

Favorite place would have to be Acadia, Maine!
