“Collectively, mosquito-borne pathogens, like dengue virus, yellow fever virus, Zika virus, and West Nile virus, are among the greatest burdens to global health, both due to their widespread prevalence, and the severe morbidity and mortality they cause in human and animal hosts. Transmission of these viruses in nature depends, among other things, on the pathogen’s ability to overcome the mosquito vector’s antiviral immune defenses. Research in my laboratory focuses on understanding these interactions between virus and vector, and then exploiting this knowledge to develop new strategies of disease control.”

How long have you been a faculty member at Texas A&M?
2 years.
How have your experiences in the Genetics graduate program shaped your thinking?
We often focus so much of our time and energy on our own research; it is fantastic to have regular opportunities to interact with experts engaged in research on many different facets of genetics. These interactions have many times given me a fresh perspective or led me to consider new directions regarding my own research.
What is your favorite conference to go to? And why?
My favorite conference to attend is the annual meeting of the American Society of Virology (ASV) because it is a very informal meeting held in the summer that is primarily focused on providing students and trainees opportunities to present their research.

If you could be any animal, what would you be and why?
Probably an Orca because I would like to experience life in the planet’s oceans. Presumably, the experience would be better, and longer, as a top predator rather than as an animal lower down on the food chain.
Who’s your favorite superhero?
Tony Stark a.k.a. Iron Man.
