During undergraduate career, two iterations of a radiation hybrid map for the domestic cat were constructed. The most recent of these is currently being used as a guide for the assembly of the final 7x genome assembly, due out later this year.
Master’s research involved the most comprehensive phylogenetic study of the great cats within genus Panthera (lion, leopard, jaguar, tiger, snow leopard, and clouded leopard) to date. An alternative, highly supported interpretation of the evolutionary history of the pantherine lineage was constructed using 39 single-copy regions of the felid Y chromosome and supportive phylogenetic evidence from a revised mitochondrial partition as well as previously published autosomal and X chromosome data.
PhD work began in the fall semester of 2009. Hybrid felines are used as a model to examine the genetics of speciation and the interactions of genes on the Y chromosome posing prezygotic barriers to reproduction.
